The water is a big draw in Bocas but there are land based trips that are great and can be arranged by the better hotels and bed and breakfasts. Here are a few of the best options available on Isla Colon.
Smithsonian Research Station
The best free tour is the Smithsonian Research Station located on the main road outside of town. The Smithsonian does all kinds of research from the mangroves to the ocean and the wet lands and their research is fascinating. Tours are Thursday and Friday at 3 and 5 pm, these people actually work.
Botanical Tour at Los Manos
The Botanical Tour at Los Manos is amazing! 13 kinds of bananas, never knew that. Los Manos is over twenty acres and tours are led by the owner, Lin, who is an amazing lady, self taught, authority on the flora around Bocas. Believe me there some surprises! Priced at $10.00 most mornings this tour is worth your while if you are up for an early morning hike.
Taxi tours to Paunch and Bluff
Taxi tours to Paunch and Bluff beaches with lunch at La Coralina overlooking the miles of ocean beach are about $15 round trip plus lunch. These beaches are lonely and spectacular, go see!
Horseback riding on Paunch and Bluff beaches and in the nearby jungle is $10 dollars an hour if you want to ride on your own or you can arrange a guided tour with lunch for $35. This is definitely worth the money; you see the island from an entirely different perspective.
Bocas del Drago and Starfish Beaches
Bocas del Drago and Starfish beach can be reached from the sea and from the land. The costs on land is a $25 taxi ride for a roundtrip taxi that takes you out and comes back to get you; pay them when they come back. The bus to Drago runs back and forth every hour, one hour out and one hour back, the cost is $2.50 each way and the schedule is pretty consistent. The bus and taxi go through the middle of the island which is interesting. Water taxis to Starfish run about $20 per person round trip. The restaurant at Drago is great but not open on Tuesdays.
Zaigon Bay Kayaks
Guests of Koko Resort and Bahia del Sol can kayak for free to the nearby mangroves in Zaigon bay. It is $10 dollars for two hours if not a guest.
Ask at your hotel for other tours that they may know about, there might be some pleasant surprises.
