Cayos Zapatillas are the islands you have most likely seen on websites and brochures of the Bocas area. These two mangrove islands, ringed by golden sand beaches and coral reefs teeming with life, fall inside of the Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park. The local legends say that the Zapatillas (or slipper) Islands were created by the feet of God as they touched down from the heavens. These islands are also important ecological sites for the critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtles that nest on their shores.
The most economic and popular way to reach this little slice of paradise is to sign up for a group tour boat at one of the boat cooperatives and tour offices in town. You can also charter private transportation for an increased price if you want to come and go as you please. Just remember, no matter how you reach these beautiful shores, please take everything you brought to Zapatillas with you when you leave, especially all your trash.
